Living in Mellieha
A large village in the north, built around a hill above one of Malta’s best-known sandy bays. Mellieħa is the choice for people who want space, quiet and countryside, and who are willing to accept that they are a long way from the centre.

Why live in Mellieha?
Beaches
Some of the island’s best sandy beaches are close by.
Space
Larger properties, gardens and pools are far more common than in the harbour towns.
Countryside
Open land, walking and a genuine village centre.
Value
More property for the money than anywhere central.
The lifestyle
Mellieħa runs on two seasons. In summer the bays and the roads to them are busy and the village is lively; in winter it is very quiet, and some businesses that serve visitors close or reduce hours. That quiet is exactly what many residents want and what makes others leave after a year. Distances are the main consideration: the drive to Sliema or St Julian’s is significant at peak times, and public transport, while it exists, is slow. A car is not optional.
Property in Mellieha
The most varied market of the ten: apartments and maisonettes in and around the village, villas and farmhouses in the surrounding countryside, and a good number of properties with outdoor space, gardens or pools — rare closer to the centre. A significant share of the stock is used for holiday letting, so long-term availability can be thinner in summer, and some landlords prefer winter lets. Sea views are common and priced accordingly.
Who is this area best for?
Families
Space, outdoor areas and a quieter pace.
Remote workers
The commute is the drawback; if there is no commute, the calculation changes entirely.
People wanting outdoor space
Gardens and pools are attainable here.
Less suited to
Anyone commuting daily to the harbour area, anyone without a car, and anyone who would find a quiet winter difficult.
